Minecraft review

Minecraft is an open-world arcade game in which you explore worlds made of cubes and other simple objects that can be destroyed freely and then used to create just about anything you can imagine.

Graphics and Sound 6/10

Graphics are probably the game’s least impressive feature – the visual style is intentionally primitive, and just about every structure is composed of crude blocks with pixelated textures. However, this simple approach is what allows you to explore vast computer-generated worlds even on relatively outdated mobile devices. And don’t forget about the soundtrack – its ambient tracks are simply mesmerizing, and they fit the game very well without getting boring even after a while.

Controls 9/10

The controls are nearly perfect, but since we’re talking about the mobile version here, they still require some getting used to. Moving around is an easy task, but when you have to act quickly, there may arise some minor problems. However, if you’re all about creating things and not surviving, this version is just as functional as its PC counterpart.

Gameplay 10/10

Simply put, Minecraft is probably the most popular and influential arcade game in the industry. Its gameplay mechanics allow you to explore random worlds that are huge and full of interesting things, including caverns and villages, forests and deserts, and even the mysterious Nether. There is also a crafting system that’s elegant yet pretty complex, a variety of game modes, and a cross-platform multiplayer option that supports up to ten players per world. Minecraft also supports various add-ons and mods, and if you want to discover other users’ creations, there’s the Marketplace full of custom maps, skins, and texture packs.

Lasting Appeal 10/10

Minecraft is a sandbox game, which means there’s no clear goal and no victory conditions. You are free to run around, exploring your world the way you want to – or enter the Creative mode to concentrate on creating all kinds of things. You can literally spend thousands of hours in the game and don’t feel bored at all.
