Google Home review
Google Home is a free app for managing all of your smart home devices, including lights, cameras, thermostats, and many more. It allows you to connect and customize them easily with just a few taps.
Design and Usability 8/10
Google Home allows you to get an overview of your smart devices, gathering all of the customization options in one place. However, the app seems to get more and more complicated with each update, and it’s easy to get lost among minor options that you don’t really need. And what’s even worse, every update brings a new portion of bugs that may sometimes make your app and the devices connected to it almost useless. Other than that, it has a nice-looking interface that really comes in handy when you need to connect new smart home devices or manage the existing ones without the need to download many various apps or tune them manually.
Key Functions 8/10
Basically, Google Home can be used to manage all of your smart home devices – and to make them all work together. It takes just a couple of taps to make your lights turn off when a movie starts or program your smart speaker to play music at some predefined time. You can use Google Home to change volume, skip tracks, turn speakers off and on, see transmission from cameras, and many more. But the app doesn’t work that smoothly often, and if something goes wrong, you have to reinstall it to fix your problem. It’s better than having various apps at once, but it does get annoying sometimes.
Security is a major problem when we talk about devices that literally allow you (or anybody with access to it) control devices all-around your house. Google Home seems to have decent security algorithms that prevent some unwanted people from accessing your smart home devices options. But some of the bugs may make the most important of your devices like cameras unattended, and that can be relatively unsafe.
- Too many built-in features that are pretty useless
- Lots of annoying bugs that require reinstalling
- Universal tool for all of your smart home devices
- Lots of features, including programmable routines
- Connects various devices easily, no need for separate apps
